…sounds pretty emo. I realized this later on, but nevertheless I think I’ll stick to my guns and keep it the way it is.

The title of this blog is actually from one of my favorite Metric songs. I came across it a year ago when I was searching for Muse songs on Youtube, and instead of Matt Bellamy’s heart-wrenching soprano I discovered the sexy Miss Haines.

There are so many reasons why I love this music video. It is impossible not to adore Emily, who is dancing and playing with fireworks while dressed in a flashy silver flapper-esque dress. Her dancing can be described as almost childish (please note dancing at :55), but it works. After all, rocker chicks don’t need to know how to dance; they can put on hipster shades, hop around a little, and it still looks badass.

I’ve got the shades, still trying to perfect the dance

Another thing that draws me to the video is the fact that it looks like they just threw it together on a whim. In my head is a somewhat drawn out scenario, where I imagine that the band was sitting around their tour bus one day, and after a few tequila shots decided that they should film a music video. A groupie volunteered their garage space as a setting, and one of the band members found a stash of fireworks in a box labeled “Fourth of July party 2009″, along with perhaps the silver outfits that Haines sports so fashionably in the video. Throw in a camera and flashing lights, and the ability to film something appears. The next day the band goes back to look at the footage, perhaps a little hungover, and sees that what they have is pretty eclectic (:36, the guitarist stops playing to pick out a wedgie?) but it gets edited into a video anyway. It’s carefree, it’s awesome.

However, music video or not, the song itself is a wonderful work of music that speaks to the frustration of not wanting to be governed by our romantic interests or desires. It is a song that deals with the struggle of conforming to a set standard (”blondes of fantasies”) and being held helpless by a higher power (”Cupid”):

Watch out Cupid, stuck me with a sickness
Pull your little arrows out and let me live my life
You better watch out Cupid, stuck me with a sickness
Pull your little arrows out and let me live my life
The one I gotta lead, all the blondes of fantasies

Some believe that the song is actually a referring to the pressures of dealing with a money-driven music industry, which also really makes sense, perhaps even more sense that the previous interpretation stated. As a growing music artist you are going to have to face new types of motivations ($$) and figure out ways to keep yourself inspired to write sincere music, and money is a sick type of muse to depend on for creativity.

Despite this plausible explanation I still prefer my first personal interpretation, because it’s easier for me, as a fan, to relate to. Others may find different ways to relate to the song:

Everybody, everybody just wanna play the lead
Play the lead
Play the lead

almost sounds like

Everybody, everybody just wanna play the Wii
Play the Wii
Play the Wii

…maybe?

Art has taken a back seat as of late, as I’ve been focusing more on academics and finishing my bachelor’s in neuroscience. Before you know it, it feels like you end up living and breathing lab reports, exams, and experiments. Rinse, repeat.

This realization hits the hardest especially during finals, a time when you feel less like a human being than a robot that regurgitates artificial knowledge pulled from textbooks and from months of notes you suddenly wish you had cared to write in better handwriting. Adrenaline combined with a playlist of drum and bass on youtube fuels you towards a goal of getting your exams over with so you can quickly keel over onto a nearby couch.

That being said, recently I came across a comic I drew after exams but had forgotten about. Touched it up briefly, but presenting…a comic about finals inspired by finals:

A weird comic, but doesn’t ring too far from reality, unfortunately.
